Wikipedia: Baltiysk (Russian: Балтийск), prior to 1945 known by its German name Pillau (Polish: Pilawa; Lithuanian: Piliava), is a Russian seaport town in Kaliningrad Oblast. It is situated on the northern part of the Vistula Spit, 29 miles from Kaliningrad, on the shore of the Strait of Baltiysk separating the Vistula Bay from the Gdansk Bay. Baltiysk is the westernmost town of Russia. Population is 33,252 (2002 Census), up from 30,000 in 1990. The town is a major naval base of the Baltic Fleet and a ferry port on the route to St.Petersburg. (see more).
Wikipedia: The Vistula Spit(Polish: Mierzeja Wislana; Russian: Балтийская коса; German: Frische Nehrung) is a spit, or peninsular stretch of land, which cuts the Vistula Lagoon off from Gdansk Bay (Danziger Bucht) in the Baltic Sea. The border between Poland and Kaliningrad Oblast, an exclave of Russia, runs across it, splitting it politically in halves. The westernmost point of Russia is located on the Vistula Spit. The Polish part contains a number of tourist resorts, incorporated administratively as the town of Krynica Morska (see more).
